Exploring TPU Series Materials: Exceptional Performance and Versatile Applications

The core competitiveness of TPU series materials lies in their comprehensive performance of "both elasticity and functionality" —— the elongation at break can reach 300-800% at room temperature, the rebound rate is 70-90%, and they also have good high and low temperature resistance (maintaining elasticity from -40℃ to 120℃), oil resistance and chemical stability. Through modification, they can also achieve flame retardancy, antibacterial properties, antistatic properties and other functions. This multi-performance advantage makes them irreplaceable in multiple fields.

The automobile manufacturing field has become an important growth pole for TPU series materials. In terms of automotive interiors, soft TPU (hardness 60A-80A) is used to manufacture steering wheel covers, seat skins and soft parts of instrument panels by virtue of its good touch and aging resistance, replacing traditional PVC materials and solving the environmental problem that PVC is easy to release plasticizers. After 1000 hours of aging resistance test, the color and elasticity retention rate still reaches more than 90%; In terms of automotive exteriors and functional parts, high-hardness TPU (hardness 70D-85D) has its tensile strength increased to more than 70MPa by adding reinforced fibers, which is used to manufacture door anti-collision strips, wiper strips and other parts. Its weather resistance can meet the use requirements of extreme environments from -40℃ to 80℃, and its service life is 2-3 times longer than that of rubber materials; In the field of new energy vehicles, flame-retardant TPU (UL94 V-0 grade) is used for battery pack seals and cable cladding layers, which has both elastic sealing and fire prevention performance, ensuring the safety of the battery system. At present, the TPU consumption per car in the world has increased from 1.5kg five years ago to 3kg, and it is expected to further increase to 5kg in the next five years.

The application in the medical and health field shows a high-end trend. Medical-grade TPU materials have achieved application breakthroughs in multiple scenarios through strict biocompatibility tests (cytotoxicity grade 1, no sensitization) and sterilization adaptability verification (withstanding 121℃ high-pressure steam sterilization and γ-ray sterilization): In the field of in vitro medical devices, high-elastic TPU is used to manufacture infusion tubes and sphygmomanometer cuffs, whose softness can reduce the discomfort of patients, and its hydrolysis resistance can make the products used in normal saline environment for more than 3 years; In the field of implantable medical devices, degradable TPU can achieve slow degradation in the body for 1-2 years by adjusting the material molecular structure, which is used to manufacture surgical sutures and tissue scaffolds, avoiding the risk of secondary surgery removal; In the field of medical protection, antibacterial TPU (bacteriostatic rate >99%) is used to manufacture protective gloves and isolation suit fabrics, which have both elastic and epidemic prevention functions. Data shows that medical-grade TPU has accounted for 18% of the global TPU market, with an annual growth rate of more than 22%.

Application innovations in the smart wearable and consumer electronics fields are constantly emerging. In terms of smart wearable devices, flexible TPU (hardness 50A-70A) is used to manufacture smart bracelet straps and earphone earplugs by virtue of its good fit and sweat resistance. Its surface can be textured to improve anti-skid performance, and there is no cracking after 5000 bending tests; In the field of consumer electronics accessories, transparent TPU (light transmittance more than 85%) is used to manufacture mobile phone cases and tablet computer covers, which have both anti-drop performance and aesthetics. The impact resistance can reach 80kJ/㎡, which can effectively alleviate drop impact; In the field of electronic component packaging, thermally conductive TPU (thermal conductivity 0.8-1.2W/(m·K)) is used for chip heat dissipation packaging, which realizes rapid heat conduction while ensuring elastic sealing, adapting to the miniaturization development needs of electronic components.

In addition, the application of TPU in traditional fields such as sports equipment (such as yoga mats, sports backpack fabrics), pipes (such as high-pressure hydraulic pipes, food-grade hoses), and textiles (such as elastic fabric coatings) is also continuously upgrading. With the continuous progress of modification technology, the application boundary of TPU series materials will be further expanded, becoming one of the key materials connecting multiple industries.
